Editorial. IARCS Newsletter Vol 1 No 1.

Editorial

Welcome to the first IARCS Newsletter. A substantial part of this issue is on the controversial report by Aho et al which exhorts theoreticians to do more applied research in order to secure their future. The goal is to generate a debate on the relevance of this report in the Indian context.

In this issue, you will also find an article on software packages for geometry and a discussion on the format of NSTCS, as well as conference reports on LICS and NSTCS, the preliminary program for FSTTCS 1996 and some announcements. We also introduce a column devoted to some seemingly innocuous problems which people have encountered in the course of their work.

You will find more information about IARCS in the next two pages. Do encourage your colleagues to join IARCS. We hope to bring out a Newsletter at least three times a year. In future issues, we hope to expand the scope to include expository technical columns as well as profiles outlining the work of different CS groups in the country. And, of course, we hope for feedback from you on issues involving the CS community in India today. Write to:
