Welcome to this edition of the IARCS Newsletter---the first of 1997. As discussed in the business meeting at FST&TCS, Hyderabad, we expect the Newsletter to come out three times a year.

In this issue, we carry detailed reports on FST&TCS 16, including the preconference workshop. We also have some photographs from the conference. An added bonus is a complete list of papers which have appeared in FST&TCS from 1981 to 1996.

Last time, we had devoted a lot of space to the Aho et al report on the future of Theoretical Computer Science. We have a response from Richard Anderson which, we hope, will spark off further debate. We also have two tongue-in-cheek parables from Rustom Mody.

The column on Pedagogical Puzzles has generated a lot of interest. This time, we carry solutions (some of them partial) to the problems listed in the last issue.

As mentioned in the previous issue, we would like to expand the scope of the Newsletter to include expository technical columns. Please send your contributions to:
