Reaching Pune

Getting Around in Pune

Aga Khan Palace

A historical landmark building having Italian arches, salons, suites and spacious lawns, where the British interned Mahatma Gandhi and his wife Kasturba Gandhi during the 1942 Quit India Movement. A must see attraction here is the photographic exhibition of rare photos and paintings on various epochs in the freedom movement.

Shaniwar Wada

An iconic landmark in the city, the fort was built in the 18th century by the Peshwas. The glory can be glimpsed in the five gateways - Dilli Darwaza (Delhi Gate), Mastani or Alibahadur Darwaza, Khidki Darwaza, Ganesh Darwaza and Narayan Darwaza. A lotus shaped fountain bears testimony to the exquisite architecture of the Peshwa dynasty. Shaniwar Wada today greets visitors with sonn et luminaire shows, dance and music festivals.

Ajanta Ellora Caves

These caves are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Ajanta Caves are situated approximately 338 Km (210 miles) from Pune. These caves, dated between circa 200BC and 600AD, are famous for its paintings and sculptures and are the reminiscences of ancient Buddhist religious art. The magnificent murals attract tourists from all over the world. Ellora Caves are situated approximately 100 Km (62 miles) from Ajanta caves. They showcase the highest levels of the architectural heritage of ancient India. Elephanta Caves - Elephanta Caves, located on Elephanta (originally known as Gharapuri) island, situated less than 10 Km (6.2 miles) from the Mumbai harbor, are also designated as a World Heritage Site. The caves have been carved out in basalt rock between the 5th and 8th centuries are home to the famous Trimurti sculpture.

Matheran

A popular resort developed by the British to beat the summer heat. The town is located at a distance of 120 kms from Pune. It is a eco-sensitive region and no personal automobile vehicles are allowed. A narrow gauge toy train from Neral which is 87 kms from Mumbai, meanders up the mountain, treating the tourists to a breathtaking view and 281 thriller zigzag turns while going up the hill top.

Lonavala and Khandala

Two hill stations tucked away in the midst of the busy Mumbai-Pune highway, about an hour and half drive from Pune. Apart from just relaxing and enjoying nature, these two resorts have plenty to see and do waterfalls, treks, yoga camps and some interesting caves to explore. Don't forget to munch on the Lonavala's favorite Chikki - a sticky candy made of unrefined brown sugar (known as Jaggery in India) and nuts, as well as the chocolate fudge!

Lavasa

Lavasa is a private city based on Italian town of Portofino. Cossetted with stunning hills and evergreen pastures, this hill city spreads around 25,000 acres and is known for its peaceful ambiance, serenity and gorgeousness.
