There were some guest talks: Vijay Chandru talked about
linear constraints and logic. Subhashis Bannerjee gave a
nice exposition of the difficulties in using
algebro-geometric methods in computer vision (even though
one is dealing with fairly small matrices and dimensions);
the exposition was enlivened with pictures of 3D panoramic
scenes reconstructed using some of these
methods. Sundarrajan talked about coding theory, in
particular Euclidean space codes and trellises. For sheer
fervour and direct contact with the audience in presenting
material, he was unmatched at this (and many other)
workshops! It was good to hear an exposition of how coding
is moving towards reaching Shannon's limit etc from an
engineer (he is from the EE Dept) - none of the cynical
``Ah, so that's been done now, is it?'' and lots of the
``how wonderful, such a simple idea but it works''. At the
end, he mentioned several open problems and urged us
computer scientists to find the solutions. Such heartening
faith in us!
